What device will help me draw insulin into a syringe?

Question

I have diabetes and I am finding it challenging to load syringes from the insulin bottle. It is particularly frustrating when the needle breaks due to misalignment. Is there a device that can help with this?

Our answer

It can be very difficult to withdraw insulin from the bottom of the vial with a syringe. There are a number of products available that can help to direct or guide the syringe when drawing insulin. Below are direct links to a couple of examples of these products:

  • Insul-Cap, by AmbiMed Inc.Insul-Cap by AmbiMed Inc. (at Diabetes Express Pharmacy) is one of the most highly rated tools for directing the syringe when loading it with insulin. Insul-Cap is a plastic cap that attaches to the top of most standard insulin vials, helping users draw insulin into a syringe by increasing stability. This device can also be purchased at a number of other online retailers, including Medicool. The price of this device is about $10 (CDN), plus a shipping fee.
  • Magni-Guide Scale Magnifier and Needle Guide by BD (at Diabetic Promotions) is another device that you may find useful. This product not only magnifies the scale on the insulin syringe for easier viewing, but it also works as a needle guide in order to help stabilize the syringe. This product is available through a U.S. retailer and costs about $10 (USD), plus a shipping fee.
