Is there such a thing as wide foot slippers?

Question

I provide care to a 90 year old woman with diabetes. My client often has swollen feet and foot sores, making it difficult and painful for her to slide her feet into standard slippers. Do you know if there is such a thing as adapted slippers for women with this specific problem?

Our answer

Swollen feet can be very uncomfortable, so it is important to be able to find footwear that is both supportive and easy to put on. Thankfully there are a number of extra-wide adapted slippers available on the market. Below are some examples of products you may want to explore:

  • Extra Wide Swollen Feet Slippers, by Silvert'sExtra Wide Swollen Feet Slippers (at Silvert’s) are super-soft plush slippers. This product offers a very wide fit that is adjustable with an easy-to-use Velcro attachment on the top of the foot. This product costs about $30 (CDN), plus a shipping fee, and comes in three colours: black, mauve and baby pink.
  • Deep and Wide Diabetic Bootie Slipper Women/Men (at Silvert's) have an extra wide fit for swollen feet and swollen ankles. A perfect choice for those who are diabetic and or have feet with edema. • Women's Extra Wide Width Adapted Slippers (at Silvert's) accommodate swollen feet and ankles and have skid-resistant non-slip soles as well as memory foam insoles. If falls are a concern for your client, slippers with a sturdy sole (such as the third option) are highly recommended.
