What device can prevent my father-in-law from falling while using the toilet?

My father-in-law insists on living on his own, but with his frailty and unsteadiness, I worry about him falling while he’s sitting down on and getting up from the toilet. What can you suggest for this?

Being able to use the toilet without fear of falling is an important part of living independently. There are a number of products on the market which provide users with added stability while lowering onto and rising from the toilet. Below are direct links to some examples:

  • Guardian Toilet Safety Rails by Medline (at Costco Canada) can support up to 300 pounds and have adjustable handles that rotate to allow for a range of positions. The price of this device is about $55 (CDN).
  • Medical Toilet Safety Rail, by Drive MedicalToilet Safety Rail by Drive Medical (at agecomfort.com) allows individuals to safely sit or stand. This device is also available for purchase from a number of other online retailers, including halohealthcare.com. The price of this device is about $40 to 70 (CDN), plus a shipping fee.
  • Elevated Raised Toilet Seat, by Drive MedicalElevated Toilet Seat by Drive Medical (at mywellcare.ca) provides increased security with its padded arms and snug fit. This product, which is built to decrease the risk of falls and other avoidable bathroom accidents, makes it easier for users to raise themselves off the toilet. This device can also be purchased at a number of other online retailers, including Walmart Canada, and costs about $80 to $100 (CDN).

While these devices may be helpful for your father-in-law in the bathroom, he may be at risk of falling in other areas of his home or community. Your father-in-law can complete a BC Government fall risk questionnaire to determine his risk of falling as well as actions he can take to prevent falls and remain independent.
