Is there a thermometer that will warn you out-loud if the temperature drops below a certain level?

Where I live, temperatures can get quite extreme - very cold in the wintertime and very hot in the summertime. For safety reasons, I prefer not to go outside in the extreme cold or heat; however, sometimes I am not sure of the temperature because my vision loss makes it very difficult for me to see the small numbers on my outdoor thermometer. I should also mention that I don't have a computer of my own or watch a lot of TV, so I don't usually get weather information that way. Given this, do you know if there is such a thing as a thermometer that can announce the temperature out loud?

Our answer

It is a good idea to be mindful of going outside in extreme weather conditions.

You may be interested in knowing about 'talking thermometers'. These devices, which can typically mount on a wall or stand upright, notify you when outdoor temperatures drop below or go above a certain temperature. Here are direct links to a couple of examples of such products:

  • Talking Indoor-Outdoor Thermometer by VoiceZone (at The Braille Superstore) allows you to stay on top of the weather without going outside. This device, which can be set to either Celsius or Fahrenheit, alerts you out loud when the outside temperature drops below 32 degrees or above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. To set up the thermometer, simply place the device near a window and stick the 10-foot probe outside. This product costs about $18 (CDN) and does not include batteries in the order (two AAA batteries are required). This product is also available at Assistive Technology Services
  • Reizen Atomic Talking Clock with Indoor-Outdoor Thermometer (at MaxiAids) is a radio-controlled clock that allows you to hear the outdoor and indoor temperatures out loud with the touch of a button. This device, which also displays the temperature in easy-to-see black numbers on an LCD screen, can be purchased for about $60 to $70 (USD), plus a shipping fee. The main unit uses two AA batteries, and the wireless remote requires two AAA batteries (not included).
