What device will help my mom move around more easily in the bathroom?

Question

With my mom’s inability to put her full weight on one foot, maneuvering in the bathroom is challenging. Is there a pole or some other assistive device that might help her transfer from one point to another in the bathroom?

Our answer

It is important to feel confident in your ability to move around, especially when in a private setting, such as the bathroom. Below are direct links to a number of security poles that are designed to provide support when moving from one location to another:

  • Security Pole and Curve Grab Bar, by StanderSecurity Pole and Curve Grab Bar by Stander (at Amazon Canada) is a floor-to-ceiling pole with a grab bar that locks into place at eight different locations. This product, which has a weight capacity of 300 pounds, can be installed virtually anywhere in the room and allows the user to move from one position to another with greater security. This product costs about $215 to $300 (CDN), plus additional shipping fees.
  • SuperPole by Healthcraft (at HME Mobility & Accessibility) is designed for individuals who have difficulty with standing or transferring from one location to another. This product can be purchased through HME for about $275 (CDN) or rented for about $150 per month (CDN). To contact HME for more information, call 1-844-415-8146 or visit one of their showrooms, located in Richmond, South Surrey, and Victoria.
  • SuperPole with Super Bar by Healthcraft (at healthcraftproducts.com) is a version of the SuperPole option described above but includes an additional bar for increased horizontal and vertical support. This system costs about $350 to $400 (CDN), plus an additional shipping fee, and can also be purchased from a number of other retailers, including lowes.ca

Professional installation of any floor to ceiling pole is highly recommended to ensure the device is safe and secure for use.

Your mom may also benefit from a shower chair or bathtub transfer bench to ensure her safety and independence while bathing. These products are available from the Red Cross HELP program with a referral from a healthcare professional.
