What assistive technology tools can help with smoking cessation?

Question

I have just been diagnosed with COPD and I need to quit smoking. What assistive technology tools can help with this?

Our answer

You may be interested in knowing about a free online program called QuitNow for quitting smoking. This program is supported by the Government of British Columbia and is delivered by the BC Lung Association. The QuitNow site will link you to online chat groups for support, video conferencing and a “quit coach.”

QuitNow helps users choose their quitting method, deal with cravings and manage setbacks.

There are also a number of free software applications designed to help a person quit smoking. Here are direct links to a couple of examples you may wish to explore:

  • LIVESTRONG MyQuit Coach app creates a personalized plan to help you quit smoking. This app is free but is only available for Apple devices (i.e. iPad, iPhone or iPad Touch).
  • Smoking Log - Stop Smoking takes a tapered approach, working to help you reduce the number of cigarettes you smoke day by day rather than quitting “cold turkey.” It alerts you if you attempt to smoke another cigarette before meeting your daily goal. The app is for free but is only available for Android devices.

  • Smoke Free - Quit Smoking Now tracks how long it’s been since you quit smoking, how your health has improved, and how much money you’ve saved. You also receive tips on how to deal with cravings, and help identify patterns that contribute to your cravings to smoke. This app is free, but there are premium perks, such as a personal coach, that cost extra. The app is available for both Apple and Android devices.
