Are there any gadgets that help find lost items like a wallet or cell phone?

Question

My husband keeps losing his wallet, cell phone, keys. It is a battle to get him to carry them together in a safer place than his many pockets. Any suggestions. Man purse and Fanny pack are vehemently vetoed.

Our answer

Losing your cell phone, wallet, and keys can be a frustrating and worrying ordeal for anyone. Also, the cost to replace these items can be a troublesome and unwanted expense. Preventing items from being lost is possible through behavioural changes such as putting items in the same place each time or having notes as visible reminders.

Below are some options you may wish to explore, when behavioural changes are not an option:

  • Retractable Key Holder by Securit (at Uline.ca) is a small keychain that is designed to clasp to the individual’s body – such as a purse or a belt loop – and uses a retractable cord to extend the keys so the keys are never separated from the individual. The key holder can hold up to 16 keys, and the cord can extend up to 48 inches. This product must be bought in a two-pack and costs about $22 (CDN), plus additional shipping fees.
  • Cell Phone Belt Clip Holster with Card Holder by BECPLT (at Amazon Canada) is an example of a cell phone holster that attaches to a belt clip. The holster includes a built-in handy card holder slot and a magnetic closure flap to help prevent cards from falling out. This product costs about $25 (CDN), plus additional shipping fees.
  • Key Tracker by Tile MateTile Mate by Tile (at amazon.ca) is used for keeping track of your essentials that are prone to being lost or forgotten. It can be easily attached to your keyring, wallet, and other objects, and it can then be tracked and emit a loud ring until locate if they do go missing.
