What products help a person stand up from a couch?

I notice that my dad is struggling with getting up from the couch. Since he spends a lot of time on the couch watching TV and reading, can you recommend something that can help him with getting up?

Our answer

Several products are designed to help seniors raise themselves up and lower themselves down from a couch or chair more easily. Some of these devices can be purchased from medical supply stores and other retailers. Examples of such products that can be purchased from online Canadian retailers are included below as direct links:

  • The Assist-A-Tray, by Stander Inc.Slipstick Furniture Risers (at amazon.ca) raise beds, couches and armchairs by 2 inches to assist with the sit to stand process. This product, which comes with four risers, costs about $27 (CDN), plus a shipping fee.
  • The EZ Stand-N-Go, by Stander Inc.Stander EZ Stand-N-Go (at agecomfort.com) features two support handles for maximum leverage. This device can also be purchased at other online retailers including Walmart Canada. This device costs about $120 to $150 (CDN), plus a shipping fee
  • Assist-A-Tray Standing Aid (at wellwise.ca) includes a swiveling tray. This device costs about $260 to $300 (CDN), plus a shipping fee.
  • The Uplift Seat Assist (at Seniors Store) is a self-powered device designed to help people stand up without assistance. The seat activates automatically, without electricity or batteries, as users begin to stand, helping to lift approximately 70% of their weight. The Uplift Seat Assist comes in two variations: STANDARD which can lift between 80lbs and 230lbs (36kg to 104kg), or PLUS which can lift between 200lbs and 350lbs (91kg to 154kg); these seats cost about $145 (CDN) plus an additional shipping fee. Electric versions of this product are also available from other online retailers such as LiftSupply and comes in two sizes (17 inches or 20 inches). The costs are about $220 to $300 (CDN). Amazon has a variety of seat assists, which range from $100 to $750 (CDN) plus an additional shipping fee.

If you’re willing to make a bigger investment ($1,000 to $4,000 CDN), lift chairs look and feel like recliner chairs, with the added feature of a remote-controlled lift function. These chairs lift to a position that promotes easier standing. You can purchase lift chairs at a number of online retailers, including HME Mobility & Accessibility and Island Mediquip.
