Ashtray with remote tube: What device will protect my client from smoking-related fires?

What device will protect my client from smoking-related fires?

Question

There have been a couple of instances lately where my client, who has limited mobility and uses a wheelchair, has fallen asleep with a cigarette in his hand. In one of these cases, an ash fell on the wheelchair upholstery, starting a small, but worrisome, fire. Thankfully, one of our caregivers, who was in the house, noticed what happened and was able to step in. Do you know of any assistive devices that may reduce the possibility of fire for individuals who are at risk of falling asleep while smoking in a wheelchair?

Our answer

While smoking in a wheelchair, it is very important to take steps to protect yourself from falling ashes. Below are direct links to a number of products that are designed to help reduce fire hazards associated with smoking:

  • Bedside Ashtray, by Parsons ADLBedside Ashtray with Remote Tube by Parsons ADL (at Seniors Store) holds your cigarette over a weighted, anti-slip ashtray at all times. One end of the replaceable 36-inch tube is attached to the end of your cigarette and the other end has a mouthpiece from which to smoke. This device ensures that the cigarette is always in the ashtray even if the smoker falls asleep. This product costs about $50 to $60 (CDN), plus an additional shipping fee.
  • Clip-On Remote Smoker Ashtray, by Parsons ADLClip-On Remote Smoker Ashtray by Parsons ADL (at Seniors Store) is similar to the bedside device described above, but instead of the ashtray being placed on a nearby table or flat surface, it can be securely mounted to your client’s wheelchair. This product costs about $50 to $60 (CDN), plus an additional shipping fee.
  • Smoker's Bib, by Parsons ADLSmoker’s Bib by Parsons ADL (at Halo Heathcare) is made of a fire-retardant and flame-resistant cloth, reducing the risk of fire from falling ashes. The bib measures 24 x 36 inches and is machine washable. This product costs about $50 to $70 (CDN), plus an additional shipping fee.
